Spanner can help turn your car details into an advert.
Could suit you if…
- Your usual group fits within 5 seats, including the driver. Check passenger space and any child-seat fit in person.
- You regularly make longer journeys: diesel may fit that pattern better than a routine of mostly short trips. Compare actual running costs.
- You often load a pushchair, dog or bulky bags: an estate layout could be useful. Try your own luggage rather than judging by the exterior size.
- You would prefer less gear changing in traffic: the recorded automatic transmission may suit. Try how this exact gearbox behaves on a test drive.
Think twice if…
- You need to carry more than 5 people together: the advert records 5 seats, including the driver.
- Most journeys are short school runs or local trips: check whether this diesel has a particulate filter and what longer runs its handbook requires.
- You need predictable ownership costs: at around 10 years old and 77,000 km, check maintenance records and upcoming work. Mileage alone does not tell you the car's condition.
- You are buying your first car or have a tight insurance budget: Spanner flags a higher insurance band. Get your own quote before paying a deposit.
This is general guidance about this type of car and your needs — not an inspection or approval of this individual car.
This is the F31 3 Series Touring body on the F30/F31 generation; common diesel choices are 318d/320d/330d, usually with BMW's 8-speed automatic (ZF 8HP) in this era. Diesel estates are excellent on long motorway trips but watch DPF/EGR behaviour if the car has mostly short urban journeys; some earlier 2.0‑litre BMW diesels had timing-chain issues on older engines, so confirm which engine code and any remedial work. Automatic gearbox fluid changes and evidence of regular oil servicing are worth a higher priority on a 10‑year‑old BMW.
- DPF regeneration history and EGR/soot build-up (especially if used for short trips)
- Automatic gearbox service record and smooth, slip-free shifting — listen for rough shifts or hesitation
- Timing‑chain / cam chain noise at cold start (N47-era 2.0 diesels can show issues) and full oil-change history
- Turbo boost hoses/intercooler for leaks and check for blue/black smoke under acceleration
- Boot floor, tailgate seals/struts and rear suspension items for corrosion or sag (estate load wear)
