The 2014 Fiesta is a small supermini most commonly fitted with 1.0-litre EcoBoost or 1.25/1.4 petrol engines and a 5-speed manual; manuals tend to be cheaper and simpler to maintain than dual-clutch automatics. If it’s the small turbo petrol (EcoBoost), be aware those need decent oil-change intervals and aren’t ideal for purely short, stop-start use; check the service record for oil-change history and any turbo work. Confirm whether the car has had any suspension or corrosion repair — older superminis can show wear at sills and arch seams after 10+ years.
- Clutch engagement and slip: test full-throttle on a safe road to check for slipping and note biting point (city cars often need a replacement).
- Watch for turbo symptoms if fitted with 1.0 EcoBoost: black smoke on hard acceleration, rattling from turbo area or oil in the intake plumbing.
- Inspect corrosion specifically around rear wheel-arch inner lips, lower sill seams and boot hinge anchor points for bubbling or previous repairs.
- Check front suspension for knocks: lower control arm bushes and drop-link/anti-roll bar wear are common at this age.
- Gearbox synchros/selection: try all gears including downshifts for crunching or missed engages (manuals can show worn synchros, especially 3rd).
