Could suit you if…
- You regularly make longer journeys: diesel may fit that pattern better than a routine of mostly short trips. Compare actual running costs.
- You prefer a higher seating position: this SUV/crossover type may suit. Try getting in and out; the body shape alone does not prove extra seats or four-wheel drive.
Think twice if…
- You need room for several children or extra passengers: the seat count is not recorded. Confirm this exact version's seats and child-seat fit; do not assume from the model name.
- Most journeys are short school runs or local trips: check whether this diesel has a particulate filter and what longer runs its handbook requires.
This is general guidance about this type of car and your needs — not an inspection or approval of this individual car.
The 2022 Tucson diesel is a modern turbocharged CRDi unit so watch for typical diesel items — DPF regeneration issues and EGR/soot build-up if it has mostly short trips. As a manual it's cheaper to maintain than an automatic but expect clutch wear on high-mile examples; some diesel variants also use AdBlue, so confirm if that applies to the car you're looking at. Confirm whether the car is FWD or AWD (some 2022 Tuscons offer AWD) because that affects off-road ability and a couple of additional components to inspect.
- DPF behaviour and regeneration history — ask for evidence of regular long runs or recent forced regenerations; look for warning lights and prior DPF cleaning work.
- Clutch condition — test for slip under load and check bite point/effort during a hill-start and heavy acceleration.
- Turbo health — watch for blue/black smoke on acceleration, unusual whine or delayed boost which can indicate turbo or oil-feed issues.
- Confirm drivetrain (FWD vs AWD) and, if AWD, inspect rear driveshaft gaiters/rear diff for leaks or play and check underbody for off-road or undertray damage.
