Most 2018 Carens diesels in Europe use Kia's CRDi engines (commonly the 1.7 CRDi) and have a DPF and EGR system — both are normal on European diesels. The manual gearbox is simple and durable but expect clutch wear on higher-mileage examples; the original 7‑year Kia warranty will now have expired on an eight-year-old car, so check for any extended cover. Confirm whether the specific car has the optional third row (some Carens were sold as 5‑seaters and some with a foldaway 3rd row) before you rely on seven-seat capacity.

• DPF condition and regeneration history — look for recent long runs in service records and check for warning lights or limp mode after cold starts.
• EGR valve and inlet carbon build-up — check for rough idle, loss of power or soot around the intake.
• Clutch bite point and smoothness — manual Carens can show slip on high-mileage cars, check under load and at motorway speeds.
• Turbo response and smoke — watch for black/blue smoke on acceleration and listen for whining or boost leaks.
• If fitted, inspect the third-row seat mounts and underfloor stowage for proper latching, upholstery wear and any corrosion or damp under the rear seats.
