Spanner can help turn your car details into an advert.
Could suit you if…
- Your usual group fits within 5 seats, including the driver. Check passenger space and any child-seat fit in person.
- You regularly make longer journeys: diesel may fit that pattern better than a routine of mostly short trips. Compare actual running costs.
- You often load a pushchair, dog or bulky bags: an estate layout could be useful. Try your own luggage rather than judging by the exterior size.
- You would prefer less gear changing in traffic: the recorded automatic transmission may suit. Try how this exact gearbox behaves on a test drive.
Think twice if…
- You need to carry more than 5 people together: the advert records 5 seats, including the driver.
- Most journeys are short school runs or local trips: check whether this diesel has a particulate filter and what longer runs its handbook requires.
This is general guidance about this type of car and your needs — not an inspection or approval of this individual car.
This is the modern Octavia estate (Combi) with a diesel engine paired to an automatic gearbox—most 2.0 TDI estate examples use the 7‑speed DSG in 2024. Diesel estates are excellent for long-distance economy but you should be aware of DPF, EGR and AdBlue systems on this drivetrain; the DSG also has scheduled fluid/filter service intervals that owners commonly follow. Parts and dealers are easy to find in Ireland thanks to VW Group commonality, but short urban use can cause DPF clogging faster than regular motorway miles.
- DPF regeneration history and whether the car shows frequent soot/black smoke or warning lights (short-trip city use causes problems)
- AdBlue system: filler cap, dosing warnings and any dashboard AdBlue fault messages
- DSG gearbox service record and evidence of recent gearbox oil/filter change; check for smooth, quick upshifts and no hesitation/jerk on acceleration
- Turbo/EGR behaviour: listen for turbo whistle/whine and check for flat spots or smoke under load signalling carbon buildup
- Rear suspension and load area for signs of heavy use or sagging (estate may have been used carrying lots of weight)
