Toyota’s C-HR is sold mainly as a hybrid in recent years, so a petrol automatic will be less common and typically cheaper to buy but not as economical as the hybrid. Most petrol automatics use a continuously variable or self-shifting automatic setup — check for smoothness and any software/recall updates; also bear in mind the coupe-like roofline reduces rear headroom and slightly shrinks boot practicality compared with more squared-off SUVs.
- Automatic/CVT behaviour: listen and drive for smooth, lag-free changes and check for any transmission-related fault codes or service history for gearbox oil/software updates.
- Turbo and intake (if it’s the 1.2T petrol): check for boost whistle/whine, intake hose cracks and any oil leaks around the turbo area.
- Engine oil level and consumption: look for signs of burning oil or heavy smoke on start-up and steady running.
- Rear-seat fit and boot usability: test ISOFIX access, rear headroom with tall passengers and how much usable luggage space is left with the sloping roofline.
- Brakes and tyres for uneven wear and typical 3-year wear items (pads, discs, tyre condition) — check for vibration or pulling under braking.
