This is Toyota’s self-charging Hybrid Synergy Drive with an e-CVT automatic — not a plug-in — so you don’t need to charge it externally and you’ll see strong real-world economy in town and on commutes. The hybrid battery is usually durable, but checks (state-of-health diagnostics) are sensible on a six-year car; also look for routine software/recall updates and evidence the inverter/cooling circuits have been serviced if flagged in the logbook. If the car is the Touring Sports (estate) variant it gives a noticeably bigger boot than the hatch but the drivetrain notes above apply to both body styles.

• Hybrid battery state-of-health report (ask dealer for a diagnostic readout) and any history of battery replacement or repair
• e-CVT behaviour: watch for excessive rev-hunting, hesitation or odd transmission noises during acceleration and at motorway merge speeds
• Evidence of recent hybrid-system/software/recall updates and coolant/inverter service (inverter cooling issues are rare but costly)
• Brake wear and pedal feel — regenerative braking changes how pads/rotors wear and can mask heavy use; check for uneven pad wear
• Rear area and tailgate struts (if estate/Touring Sports): check for water ingress, boot floor condition and any signs of collision repairs
