The 2019 Golf diesel line-up normally includes 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines; many 2.0 TDI variants also use AdBlue and have SCR aftertreatment. As this is a manual diesel, watch clutch and dual-mass flywheel wear on higher-mileage examples, and expect DPF/EGR issues if the car has mainly done short trips — ask whether regular long-drive regens have been achieved.
- DPF history: any warning lights, evidence of frequent forced regens, or a garage log showing successful long-drive regens
- Clutch and pedal feel for slip or judder; listen for rattles from a dual-mass flywheel on cold start/idle
- Gearbox selection and synchros (no crunching into 2nd/3rd) and smooth clutch engagement
- Service record for AdBlue top-ups (if fitted) and for cambelt/timing service or tensioner work appropriate to the engine
- Look for soot/oil leaks around the EGR/intake and check for any turbo lag/smoke which can indicate EGR or turbo issues
