Most 2020 Golfs with petrol + automatic will be fitted with VW’s DSG dual-clutch gearbox (common 7-speed) and small-capacity TSI petrol engines (1.0 or 1.5). DSGs need interval oil/solenoid service and the petrol engines are fitted with a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) on many EU cars — both things buyers should be aware of. The Mk8 Golf also introduced more touchscreen/ADAS electronics, so check infotainment and driver-assist functions for software updates or faults.
- DSG gearbox behaviour and service history — listen for rough or delayed shifts and verify a DSG oil/solenoid service has been done (rough interval ~60k km).
- Signs of GPF problems or excessive soot/oil topping-up — repeated short-trip use can clog the GPF and hide oil consumption.
- Infotainment and ADAS operation — test touchscreen responsiveness, reversing camera, adaptive cruise and lane-assist for faults or missing software updates.
- Suspension and bushes — check for creaks, uneven tyre wear and rear trailing-arm corrosion (common on 6‑year old hatchbacks).
- 12V battery and start-stop function — battery performance often declines by this age; check cranking strength and that stop-start works reliably.
