Could suit you if…
- Many journeys are local or relatively short: petrol can fit that use without choosing diesel just for occasional long trips.
- You prefer a higher seating position: this SUV/crossover type may suit. Try getting in and out; the body shape alone does not prove extra seats or four-wheel drive.
- You would prefer less gear changing in traffic: the recorded automatic transmission may suit. Try how this exact gearbox behaves on a test drive.
Think twice if…
- You need room for several children or extra passengers: the seat count is not recorded. Confirm this exact version's seats and child-seat fit; do not assume from the model name.
- You need certainty about this particular car: type-level advice cannot confirm its condition. Ask for service records, an insurance quote and an independent inspection.
This is general guidance about this type of car and your needs — not an inspection or approval of this individual car.
Most 2018 Tiguans with petrol engines use VW’s TSI family and are paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic on many trims; some older petrols are 1.4/1.5/2.0 TSI so check the exact engine code. DSG boxes need regular fluid/ filter changes at recommended intervals and AWD versions are sold as 4MOTION — the Tiguan Allspace is the longer 7-seat version, while the standard Tiguan is a five-seater. Expect a comfortable, well-specified cabin but petrol will be less economical than a diesel on long motorway miles.
- DSG gearbox behaviour and service history — ensure DSG fluid/filter changes have been done (around every 60k km) and test for clunky shifts or judder at low speeds.
- Engine oil consumption and turbo/PCV oil leaks — observe cold start noise and check for visible oil leaks around turbo and valve cover.
- Cold-start timing-chain/tensioner noise on higher-mileage TSI engines — listen for rattles for the first 30–60 seconds after start.
- Suspension and steering knocks — check front strut mounts, anti-roll bar links and wheel bearings on pothole-heavy Irish roads.
- If fitted, check 4MOTION/AWD rear axle for leaks and unusual noises and confirm any associated service history.
